The quaint seacoast town of Rockport, Massachusetts is a popular destination for lighthouse lovers and maritime photographers. The region boasts many famous lighthouses, including the twin lighthouses of Thacher Island and Straitsmouth Island, which are located off the coast of Rockport. These two extraordinary lighthouses are the only twin lighthouses in the United States and were built in 1861.
Rockport is also known as “Granitetown,” a nickname derived from the area’s granite industry, which helped to put the town on the map in the late 19th century. This lighthouse is open to the public and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline.
Another great way to explore the coastline of Rockport is to kayak out to Thacher Island and Straitsmouth Island. The association recommends that visitors use caution, pay attention to weather conditions, and turn back if they feel uncomfortable. The journey to the islands takes about three miles and can be a challenge for beginners or those with limited endurance. All kayakers are encouraged to wear a life vest and take precautions against hypothermia.
