Lighthouse Elementary Cooperative is a unique choice program within Everett Public Schools, serving students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The school is community-based and teachers and families work hand-in-hand toward their common goal of enriching student’s lives through educational opportunities that go beyond those offered in traditional classroom environments. Families support the standard curriculum set by Everett Public Schools by leading small groups of students in specialty lessons that complement the regular classwork, such as cooking, art, foreign language, computer programming and bucket-filling/social skills.
Parents founded the school in 2002 and continue to be highly involved in governance, fundraising, and community building. They also volunteer to help with classroom instruction, gardening and nature trail maintenance, special events planning, and general office assistance. The school offers a flexible schedule with classes in the morning and afternoon on most days that school is open, as well as on non-school days, snow days, mid-winter break and spring break.
The school serves a diverse student population with a significant percentage of low-income students. Students perform below state averages on ELA and math proficiency tests. Nearby schools like Wave Preparatory Elementary School and Ps 105 Bay School (The) significantly outperform Lighthouse Elementary on both measures.
Schools that serve primarily students of color receive substantially less local and state funding than schools that serve mainly white students. Learn how you can help close this gap by supporting teachers through DonorsChoose.
