Lighthouse in Maine is a small seaside town on the island of Maine, which offers visitors a unique chance to see a historic lighthouse and to take part in the maritime history and culture of this charming little town. Established in 1690, the Lighthouse opened its doors as a simple wood cabin and was used by fishermen, skippers, swimmers and others who depended on the lighthouse for help during their day trips out at sea. Today, visitors can still use the lighthouse for tours and to take a cruise through it, or just enjoy one of the many events and attractions that make Lighthouse in Maine such a special place!
There are two main lighthouses in Maine: America’s oldest and best-known lighthouse, which are the Houson Island lighthouse, and the newer, but more visited by tourists, is the Le Cape Haven lighthouse. The Houson Island lighthouse is a beautiful Victorian building with a white building surrounding it on three sides. On one side of the lighthouse there is a restaurant with a great view of the water; on the other sides of the lighthouse are two wonderful shops featuring an assortment of interesting antiques and knick-knacks. The Houson Island lighthouse has been declared a National Landmark and has a permanent exhibition space on the second floor, where visitors can learn about the history of the lighthouse and view photographs of the original wood cabin. There are also interpretive displays, boat tours, and trips to the Maritime Museum, where you can see artifacts from the days of the transatlantic journey of the Mayflower and other ocean shipping routes.
Another great attraction is the Town of Gardiner, which is only a short drive from the Lighthouse in Maine. Here, you can experience the town’s rich history while strolling through the town’s beautiful Market Square or enjoying the shopping and dining opportunities on the beach.
