Lighthouses Throughout the US and Canada
Lighthouses USA is a non-profit organization that helps preserve America’s maritime history by supporting the local sailors and fishermen. It was created over forty years ago to help US citizens celebrate their love of the oceans by highlighting lighthouses and their contributions to our nation’s identity. If you are planning a sailboat trip there are many lighthouses along the east coast of the United States that can make your sailing experience one to remember. Many people travel along the US Eastern Seaboard, a string of seacoast communities along the shores from New Hampshire to Rhode Island. A special group of these unique American neighborhoods gather for sailboat cruises on the New England coast every summer.
Along the Eastern Seaboard there are many lighthouses that have historic value. One such example is the Presidio Nacogdoches National Landmark; located in San Diego County, this National Historic Landmark features Spanish mission architecture. Another example is the Presidio Trustee’s Islands where two small beaches, historic pine trees, and other artifacts can be found. Each island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was selected as a U.S. Marine Corps Historic Landmark. Other notable lighthouses along the east coast include the Society Islands (PA), New Orleans, Chesapeake, Virginia, and Albemarle.
To take part in the preservation of our nation’s lighthouses and to enjoy their sights, many people travel to the US Eastern Seaboard each year. This traveling community of sailors and enthusiasts offers so much for all ages and skill levels. There are so many opportunities to visit the many lighthouses along the US Eastern Seaboard and to participate in fun activities including sailing races, festivals, and heritage celebrations. These unique communities also provide a place for children to visit and play while getting a feel for the culture of the US Eastern Seaboard. All along the US Eastern Seaboard, there are so many lighthouses that have been able to overcome history and time to still serve as important cultural symbols of our nation.
