Here are just the top lighthouses on the east coast of Canada and the United States. Nova Scotia is well known for its lighthouses and it s not the only location on the west coast where you will find beautiful lighthouses! If you are looking for lighthouses that are available to cruise by then there are a couple of great locations. Most of the larger and more prominent lighthouses are now full staffs, but some of the smaller ones still have the ability to be visited by a live person as the captain will be glad to take you on board. These boats cruise along the Maine coast looking for wrecks, especially oil rigs, that are in need of taking up water!
One of the most famous lighthouses in North America, the Preserve of Acadia is also located in Nova Scotia. The most popular area to visit is the Horseshoe Bay lighthouse, which is a historic landmark just off the coast of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Just six days ago the Nova Scotia government announced that they will be restoring this historic lighthouse so that it can once again become a visitor attraction. This lighthouse was originally built in 1843 and has been listed on the Canadian National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.
Another important lighthouse in Nova Scotia is the Samsonite Light House Historic Site. This beautiful structure sits right on the Horseshoe River and was designed by the world renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is the only building of its kind in Cape Breton Island and is one of the best lighthouses on the east coast for two reasons: it is historic and it sits on a real river! You can also visit the historic district of Drummond and visit some of the homes that line the banks of the River of Pints. While you are visiting the area, you should also explore the Samsonite site because this is where the brand name was born!
