The Pensacola Lighthouse is a historic light station on the Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida. It has a rich and varied heritage as it has been a part of five different nations, including Spain, France, England, the Confederate States of America, and finally the United States. It has been described as one of the most well-preserved lighthouses in the country. It serves as a cultural tourism attraction and also raises awareness about preservation issues. It serves audiences of different ages, genders and nationalities from all over the world.
The lighthouse is situated on the bluff at the mouth of the bay. It was built in 1858 and lit on New Year’s Day, 1859 using a first-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation today and can be seen from 27 nautical miles away. The lighthouse is a square pyramidal wooden tower that stands 160 feet tall and is painted white. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
It is one of the most haunted lighthouses in the country. One of the most famous ghosts is Michaela Ingraham, the wife of Jeremiah Ingraham, who was murdered at the lighthouse in 1855. She is said to haunt the keeper’s cottage where she remained after her husband’s death. She is known to haunt guests who stay there and is thought to be a very unhappy spirit.
The lighthouse is also home to numerous ghosts of sailors who died while serving their country. The ghosts have been known to linger around the lighthouse and have been seen in the keeper’s cottage, on the stairs leading to the lantern room, and even in the mighty lens. Guests who have experienced supernatural activity say that it was very unsettling.
