Nantucket Basket with Scrimshaw Lighthouse Charm Necklace
This Nantucket basket charm is a highly desirable and collectable piece of Nantucket history! Featuring a Nantucket scrimshaw lighthouse inset in the center of a sterling silver basket. A classic coastal design that will be worn and treasured forever!
The Nantucket basket was invented in 1948 by a weaver named Jose Formoso Reyes. He added a lid to the basket so women could use it as a handbag. In the early 70s a Nantucket woodcarver and ivory carver carved a small whale onto one of Reyes’ baskets. This led to the creation of the famous Nantucket “friendship” basket style so covetable today.
