A rare lighthouse for sale in Virginia
If you’re interested in living in a real estate treasure, you may want to check out this historic property in Mathews County. This caisson-style light station isn’t firmly anchored to the shore, but juts out into Chesapeake Bay three miles offshore, and it still holds its original working light. It’s for sale, and the seller wants a homeowner who is dedicated to history and lighthouses, says Laura Pierce of ERA Bay Real Estate in Mathews County.
Lighthouses are a big part of American history, but they also take on a special meaning in some cases. A recent slew of homes for sale in Portland, Oregon, were built with the intention of being lighthouses, and some have been converted into family residences.
A Portland lighthouse keeper who recently sold her island and lighthouse isn’t the first to try to sell such an item. In 1959, George Hupman purchased the Tillamook Rock lighthouse and used some of his proceeds to clean up the ash-covered tower. But the ashes of his parents and some friends were left in a glass case on the top floor.
Another lighthouse is for sale in Florida. This one is in a family-friendly, exclusive neighborhood called Lighthouse Point. Many of the homes in this area are waterfront and have views of the ocean. It’s a fantastic place for boaters because it’s so close to the beach.
The home’s owner is looking for a buyer who will use her money to repair the lighthouse and keep it running for years to come. It will cost around $1.5 million to seal up the eroding metal and install new doors, according to her email.
