There are many magnificent lighthouses in Upstate New York, including the Crown Point Lighthouse on Lake Champlain, which was christened in 1912 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s discovery of the lake. This historic landmark is elegantly lit at night and boasts a bust of Auguste Rodin. In the 1960s, the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse was threatened with demolition, but local high school students rallied to save it.
One of the oldest still standing lighthouses is located in Stony Point. Despite its smaller height and simple design, this landmark was originally constructed for short distances. However, it was still large enough to guide ships through Stony Point, New York. One of the oldest lighthouses in the country, the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse was built in 1827 and still serves as a beacon to warn mariners away from dangerous areas. A half-mile trail leads to the lighthouse, which is located in the heart of the Hudson River, and allows you to observe the crashing waves of Lake Ontario as well as the St. Lawrence. Guests can also stay at a hostel nearby and experience a unique way of life.
The Selkirk Lighthouse was one of only four lighthouses in the United States with a bird cage-style lantern. Constructed for $3,000, this lighthouse is now owned by the marina nearby.
