The first lighthouse in North Carolina was lit in 1794, and it is still one of the state’s most iconic icons. Originally built to warn sailors of land, lighthouses have changed a lot over the years. Nevertheless, they are still an important symbol of North Carolina’s maritime history, and the lightkeepers who keep them working are true treasures.
Located on the coast of Wilmington, the Bald Head Island Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in the state. Originally fashioned of white stucco, the lighthouse spanned 110 feet and stood 36 feet tall. Its lantern room was offset like a rapper’s head. Its white stucco exterior and thick concrete walls protected it from weather, making it one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country.
Coastal North Carolina is home to seven lighthouses that guard the shores. Each one offers an incredible view from the top, and some can even be climbed! The Currituck Beach Light Station, for instance, has been around since 1875, and is made of roughly 1 million red bricks.
