Lighthouses You Can Go Inside
There are dozens of lighthouses you can visit in the United States, and many of them can be entered for a guided tour. Many are still operational, but you can also go inside a lighthouse for free if you’re a local. While the purpose of these structures is practical, they are also attractive as tourist attractions. You can take a tour of a lighthouse in a different state to learn more about its history and how it was constructed.
Most lighthouses are open to the public, and a few offer tours that include climbing the tower. Burnt Island Lighthouse, for example, is accessible only by boat from Boothbay Harbour. Other lighthouses allow visitors to tour the interiors by kayak on Sundays. While the experience is mixed, it is still worth it to see the giant eye of Fresnel lens and to experience the incredible views from the top.
Another popular lighthouse is the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, which is open to the public for tours on the second Saturday of each month. The tallest of these two lighthouses, this one is the most popular and offers the most comprehensive tour. This lighthouse is the oldest and most iconic in New England, and has a rich history. You can watch whale migration up close by at the Point Fermin Lighthouse, which is open daily – except for December 25.
